Frankly speaking, I'd never expressed any interest in knowing more about Singapore's history. However, I was enlightened and amazed by the trail down the Singapore River.
Previously,I always thought that our government was not doing much to preserve our very own local culture and history. Singapore has already forgo many historical sites which should be remembered; with the demolishing of various buildings that hold certain historical values worth retaining (to make way for commercial or housing development purposes - scarcity of land).
Nonetheless, after the heritage trail along the Singapore River, my previous perception has slightly changed to a better one. With the 15 stops in the heritage trail, I realized that there are indeed places or buildings where the government has preserved. By embarking on this heritage trail, I got to experience and got to know all the untold stories behind the streets and historical landmarks of Singapore. Many of these areas have rich historical or social memories that we may not be aware. For example: The Fullerton Square; the place where rallies were held in the past and the story behind the Merlion etc. As observed during the trail, the information about the different sites actually revealed the importance of Singapore River even then as a trading post for ships from different places such like India, China etc.
There are quite a number of trails offered to the public, to educate and increase the level of awareness of the historical sites. However, these are only found in certain areas in Singapore. I believe that there are more historical sites, which hold equally historical values as the stated sites in the heritage trails.
Notwithstanding the current efforts put up, I still hope that our government will not make any more irreversible mistakes by clearing away some historical sites. Cause all the historical monuments and sites are like books which contain stories to Singapore's past.
